The objective of the Manager, Tax is to manage the Group’s tax team to provide high quality advice to all business units on operational, structuring, governance and tax risk management issues, and to ensure the Group meets its tax reporting and compliance obligations and pays the right amount of tax. The Tax Manager also plans and develops acceptable and appropriate tax strategies for review and consideration by Senior Management. The Tax Manager is also tasked with actively managing the Group’s relationships with relevant revenue authorities.
 
The Tax team provide high quality advice to all business units on operational, structuring, governance and tax risk management issues, and ensure the Group meets its tax reporting and compliance obligations and pays the right amount of tax.
 
 
Virgin Australia Group is a major Australian airline headquartered in Brisbane, Australia. The company operates scheduled domestic and short-haul international flights, charter and cargo services, and the award-winning loyalty program Velocity Frequent Flyer. In September 2020, US private equity firm Bain Capital acquired Virgin Australia in a $3.5 billion deal. The airline has now re-launched as a mid-market carrier with a renewed focus on small and medium sized businesses, price-sensitive corporates, premium leisure travellers and holiday makers. Since November, Virgin Australia has been working on a plan to set itself up for future success. The Group has worked to ramp up flying, simplified its organisational structure, confirmed plans for 25 new 737 aircraft to renew and grow the fleet, and signalled deeper investment in technology and customer experience.
 
 
 
Key Responsibilities of this role:
 
  • Manage external and internal resources to provide alternative effective strategies that ensure appropriate tax payable by the group.
  • Co-ordinate the development of the Group from a tax perspective, including any Joint Ventures, new subsidiaries, M&A, aircraft and structured financing and other corporate structuring activity.
  • Ensure the efficient flow of information between internal and external parties regarding matters of taxation with internal clients to achieve organisational objectives, including escalation to Senior Management and the Board when required.
  • Provide advice regarding possible tax effect impacts on the annual budget and subsequent reforecasts as required
  • Manage the completion of compliance obligations (returns,filings, instalments, remittances) for tax returns (all jurisdictions); FBT; other indirect taxes and R&D
  • Maintain a positive relationship between the Group and the ATO, NZIRD and all other relevant revenue authorities
  • Ensure the accuracy of all taxation-related items and disclosures at a statutory entity level for Group and any other relevant entities
  • Manage the development and enhancement of systems, processes and controls that ensure the delivery of a complete suite of policies that will provide management of the Group with sufficient direction on finance matters within your area of accountability

 

 

What we're looking for:

  • At least 10 years tax experience, in taxation in Commercial Tax Function and/or Chartered environment
  • Experience in direct dealings with Tax Authorities
  • Exposure to international taxation, e.g. Double Tax Agreements and Transfer Pricing
  • Superior understanding of taxation and accounting concepts
  • Effective written / verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrable history of supervising a Team
  • Previous experience with Tax Consolidation Environment for a trading group
  • Detailed knowledge of Australian and New Zealand taxes
