What you’ll be doing

The Infrastructure team sits within Virgin Australia’s Technology and Digital division and is a core platform capability in our evolving product and platform operating model. The team provides the foundational cloud, network, compute and end user services that enable persistent domain and platform teams to deliver business value with speed, reliability and security. As custodians of our enterprise technology foundations, the team drives platform stability, modernisation and continuous improvement to support

Virgin Australia’s ambition to be Australia’s most loved airline. This senior leadership roles reports to our Chief Technology Officer - Platforms. 

Ensure Reliable and Resilient Technology Foundations

• Deliver highly available, secure and performant infrastructure platforms that enable safe airline operations and seamless customer experiences, meeting agreed service levels and resilience requirements.

Enable Product and Platform Delivery at Speed

• Provide scalable, standardised and reusable infrastructure services that empower persistent domain and platform teams to deliver business value faster, with reduced friction and technical debt.

Strengthen Security, Risk and Operational Control

• Reduce infrastructure related risk exposure through strong cyber hygiene, disaster recovery capability, compliance alignment and disciplined operational governance.

Optimise Cost and Investment Efficiency

• Actively manage cloud, hosting and infrastructure spend to maximise return on technology investment while balancing performance, resilience and future growth.

Build Sustainable Capability and Ways of Working

• Develop a high performing infrastructure function aligned to the product and platform model, embedding automation, platform engineering practices and clear role accountability to support Virgin Australia’s ongoing transformation.

Further Responsibilities: 

• Define the infrastructure vision aligned to business strategy
• Own cloud, data centre and network strategy Decide on build vs buy, cloud vs on prem, hybrid models Plan multiyear investment and capacity roadmaps Standardise platforms and tooling
• Oversee public cloud environments such as AWS, Azure or GCP
• Manage compute, storage, networking and platform services
• Ensure high availability and resilience
• Drive automation and Infrastructure as Code adoption
• Optimise performance and cost
• Own uptime, SLA and SLO performance Lead incident management and major incident response Drive root cause analysis and preventative actions Implement monitoring, observability and alerting frameworks Establish disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities
• Partner with security teams to secure infrastructure layers Oversee patching, vulnerability management and hardening Ensure identity and access controls are enforced Support audits and compliance obligations Reduce operational and technology risk exposure
• Tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline

You’ll be great in this role if you have…

• 10+ years' experience in IT infrastructure, with significant time in a senior leadership role
• Tertiary qualification in IT/ Technology or equivalent role
• Accountability for enterprise scale cloud, network, compute and end user environments
• Experience leading infrastructure strategy, roadmaps and multi-year modernisation programs, as well as Cloud and Platform Transformation
• Proven ability to standardise and simplify complex legacy environments
• Experience embedding security and risk controls across infrastructure domains
• Enterprise Infrastructure Expertise – Deep technical understanding of cloud platforms, networks, compute, storage, end user technology and enterprise hosting environments.
• Demonstrated experience leading cloud adoption or migration programs at scale
• Financial Acumen – Ability to manage large infrastructure budgets, optimise cloud consumption and balance cost, performance and risk trade offs.
• Strong familiarity with ITIL, SRE or modern service management practices
• Cloud certifications such as AWS, Azure or GCP at professional or architect level. Strong preference for extensive AWS experience
• Demonstrated experience applying DevOps best practices and principals
• Have worked in a large, complex and fast-paced organisation
