What you will be doing:

At Virgin Australia, data plays an increasingly important role in how we understand our customers, improve operational performance and deliver better business outcomes.

We’re looking for a Data Reporting & Analytics Specialist who can explore operational data, clarify requirements for analysis, and support assessment of its suitability for innovative data applications in our operation.

In this role, you’ll work with the Operations Transformation team and Virgin Australia’s analytics community to investigate agreed operational improvement hypotheses, drawing on existing data platforms and analytical work. You’ll investigate available data, identify gaps and help define requirements for data engineering to make relevant sources accessible. You’ll also interpret existing data definitions and support assessment of data quality, completeness and preparation needs for new operational applications, including machine learning and AI.

Reporting directly to the Senior Manager, Transformation you will:

  • Partner with stakeholders to understand their business questions, decision needs and reporting priorities
  • Turn those needs into clear reporting and analytical requirements, including KPI definitions, measures, data sources and acceptance criteria
  • Design, develop, test and maintain dashboards, scorecards, scheduled reports and reusable reporting datasets where required to support operational analysis
  • Analyse trends, variances, risks and root causes, then translate your findings into practical recommendations
  • Validate data quality, completeness and suitability for intended use, check reporting outputs, investigate discrepancies and work with data owners and technical teams to resolve issues
  • Monitor reporting outputs developed for the purpose of driving transformation initiatives, coordinating fixes with data engineering or platform teams when needed
  • Improve consistency and efficiency by automating manual reporting and reducing duplicated or low-value report
  • Maintain clear documentation of definitions, assumptions, analytical and reporting logic and ownership
  • Work in the office a minimum of three days a week to build strong working relationships with Virgin Australia’s analytics community, and Operations Division stakeholders.

You'll be great in this role if you have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, or equivalent practical experience, in data analytics, information systems, business, commerce, mathematics, statistics, technology or a related discipline
  • Hands-on experience exploring and analysing data, including developing and maintaining reports, dashboards or analytical products in a complex organisation
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret complex data and explain what it means to technical and non-technical audiences
  • A careful approach to validating outputs, reconciling data and resolving data quality issues
  • The ability to plan and prioritise work, manage competing requests and deliver to agreed timeframes
  • An understanding of data quality and preparation requirements for machine learning and AI applications, or a willingness to develop this knowledge will be well regarded
  • Relevant certification or formal training in Power BI, Tableau, SQL, data visualisation, business intelligence, analytics or data governance will be well regarded
