What you’ll be doing:

The Data Engineer is a hands-on technical role focused on building and supporting data solutions in Databricks. You’ll use SQL and Python to work with complex datasets, build reliable data pipelines, and support analytics, reporting and marketing across Velocity.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working directly with data, writing SQL, building pipelines and solving real problems.

This role will suit someone who enjoys being close to the technology – building solutions, troubleshooting problems and continuously improving how data is delivered and used.

• Design, build, test and support scalable data pipelines and data products using Databricks, SQL and Python.
• Develop and maintain end-to-end ETL/ELT processes across complex datasets and source systems.
• Write and optimise advanced SQL and Python code to transform, process and deliver data.
• Troubleshoot data and pipeline issues, identify root causes and implement practical, technically sound solutions.
• Design data structures and models that support reliable and scalable downstream analytics.
• Manage and optimise data assets and pipelines for performance, scalability, reliability and cost efficiency.
• Automate manual processes and continuously improve data engineering and data delivery practices.
• Collaborate with squads and stakeholders to translate data requirements and business problems into practical technical solutions.
• Provide technical input to squads and leadership on data technologies, solution design, delivery planning, prioritisation and timeline estimates.

You’ll be great in this role if you:

• You have strong, hands-on SQL skills and are comfortable writing, debugging and optimising complex queries, transformations and data pipelines across large datasets.
• You have practical Python experience and have used it to solve real data engineering problems, rather than only for scripting or analysis.
• You have hands-on experience building, testing, maintaining and troubleshooting end-to-end ETL/ELT pipelines, and are comfortable investigating when things go wrong.
• You’ve worked with a modern cloud data platform. Experience with Databricks is highly preferred, although strong experience with Snowflake, AWS Redshift or Azure-based data platforms is also valuable.
• You have a solid understanding of data warehousing, data modelling, data integration and performance optimisation, and know how to apply these concepts in practice.
• You’re a hands-on problem solver who can independently investigate data issues, trace problems through pipelines, identify root causes and work through complex technical challenges.
• You’re comfortable using Git and version control and working with modern software and data engineering practices, including testing, code reviews and deployment processes.
• Experience with marketing data, campaign platforms or CDPs, customer analytics, web analytics or Power BI would be advantageous, but isn’t essential.
• You communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and you’re comfortable managing multiple priorities in a small, fast-moving team.
