What you’ll be doing
As our Platform Architect, you’ll sit within the Data Platform Team and play a critical role in shaping, building, and evolving the data platforms that power Virgin Australia.
You will design, build and maintain the underlying data platform that supports reporting, analytics, data science, and AI. You’ll help create the patterns, pipelines, frameworks, and DevOps practices that enable our teams to move fast and deliver safely.
You’ll influence technical direction, strengthen engineering capability, and ensure we’re using data platform technologies in the smartest, most scalable way—always aligned to VA’s technology standard
You will...
- Design low-level solutions that engineering teams can build and scale (not limited to Databricks)
- Partner with technical and business stakeholders to deliver fit-for-purpose data solutions
- Define and maintain architectural patterns, standards, and reusable templates
- Develop tools that support analytics, machine learning, and data governance
- Build and optimise modern data pipelines for ingestion, storage, and transformation
- Enable analytics, machine learning, and data governance capabilities
- Strengthen DevOps practices across CI/CD, branching, and environment management
- Conduct code reviews and uplift engineering quality
- Implement strong security controls, monitoring, and compliance (e.g. GDPR, IAM, DLP)
- Identify knowledge gaps to help grow a cross-functional, high-performing team
You’ll be great in this role if you have ….
- 2+ years’ experience with Databricks (Must)
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Strong experience with modern data tools and cloud-based data platforms, and administering/configuring AWS
- Proven experience designing and optimising data pipelines
- Background working in DevOps environments
- Experience producing high-level designs and presenting to stakeholders
- Proficiency in SQL, Python, and Spark (Must)
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Solid knowledge of data architecture, warehousing, and platform design principles
- Familiarity with privacy, data protection, and security frameworks (GDPR a bonus)
