Safety Assurance Specialist

What you will be doing:

As a Safety Assurance Specialist, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring our Safety Management System (SMS) and broader manual suite are effective, compliant, and aligned with regulatory standards. Sitting within the Safety Systems team, this role works closely with internal and external stakeholders to uphold the highest safety standards across Virgin Australia and VARA.

As a Safety Assurance Specialist, you will be responsible for:

  • Plan, lead, and conduct high-value operational safety audits in line with the airline’s SMS.
  • Perform audits across ground handling, fuel operations, WHS, and aerodrome inspections.
  • Lead safety investigations in accordance with the airline’s SMS.
  • Gather and analyse evidence such as procedures, data, footage, and flight data.
  • Prepare technical reports, provide analysis, and maintain accurate audit records in the safety database.
  • Identify and report operational hazards as part of the Safety Management System (SMS) and Security Management System (SeMS).
  • Facilitate the Daily Occurrence Review (DOR) meeting to assess safety reports.
  • Escalate safety concerns appropriately and notify the ATSB of reportable matters when required.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on risk assessment, event categorization, and triaging.
  • Support departments in creating assurance data packs, training materials, and safety communications.

 

You'll be great in this role if you:

  • Experience working within the aviation sector (desirable)
  • Lead Auditor Qualifications 
  • Lead Investigator Course 
  • Safety Management 
  • Previous experience in an aviation operational role (Flight Operations, Ground Operations and/or Airworthiness/Engineering)
  • In-depth understanding of Safety Management Systems (SMS)
  • Familiarity with the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR) framework
  • Knowledge of airline operations, including: Engineering & Maintenance, Flight Operations and Cabin Operations
  • Have a demonstrated ability in interpretation of legislative or other specified requirements to produce practical operational solutions.
  • Are proficient in MS office suite of programmes and advance user of Intelex and Power Bi.
