What you’ll be doing

As our Senior Engineer, Integration, you’ll design and build the integration services that connect critical platforms across Virgin Australia and Velocity Frequent Flyer.

This is a hands-on senior engineering role where you’ll be involved in API design, development and technical discovery. You’ll work as part of a cross-functional delivery team, contributing to stand-ups, planning sessions and other agile ceremonies while helping shape secure, scalable and reliable integration solutions.

You’ll:

  • Design and develop APIs, microservices and event-driven integration solutions.
  • Write testable, scalable and efficient code and leading code reviews
  • Use approved AI-assisted engineering tools to support technical discovery, API design, & implementation.
  • Use AI-assisted code review to identify potential defects, security risks, performance issues and non-compliance with engineering standards.
  • Share effective AI engineering practices and mentor engineers in the safe and responsible use of AI tools.
  • Work across both synchronous and asynchronous integration patterns. 
  • Build cloud-based microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Experience designing and implementing integrations on microservices based architecture
  • Develop solutions that run at scale across AWS and Kubernetes environments.
  • Work with systems integration, Springboot, APIs (SOAP, REST), API Management platform (Apigee), events streaming (Kafka) and containerisation (Kubernetes / Docker)
  • Contribute to layered microservice architectures, including Experience, Business, Domain and Adapter API layers.
  • Take part in technical discovery, solution design and estimation when required.
  • Apply strong engineering practices across code quality, testing, automation, CI/CD and documentation.
  • Support production readiness, observability, resilience and ongoing service improvement.
  • Work closely with engineering leads, peers, testing teams, delivery teams and offshore team. 
  • Communicate technical decisions, risks and dependencies clearly across teams.
  • Mentor other engineers and contribute to stronger engineering standards and reusable integration patterns.

You’ll be great in this role if you have…

  • Extensive experience in software engineering, with strong experience in the integration space.
  • Practical experience using AI coding assistants across software design, development, testing, code review and documentation.
  • The ability to write clear technical context and instructions that produce useful, repeatable AI-assisted outcomes.
  • Experience creating reusable AI-assisted development workflows, prompts or team guidance will be highly regarded.
  • Deep hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot.
  • Strong experience designing and developing APIs and microservices.
  • Experience with event-driven integration and Kafka.
  • Experience working with Kubernetes and cloud-based microservice environments.
  • A solid understanding of layered API and microservice architecture.
  • Experience with OpenAPI and API-first design practices.
  • Strong knowledge of software engineering practices, testing, CI/CD, observability and production support.
  • The ability to work collaboratively across onshore and offshore teams.
  • Clear communication skills and the confidence to engage with leads, peers, testers and delivery stakeholders.
  • A team-first mindset, strong technical judgement and a practical approach to problem-solving

Experience working in a high-volume, customer-facing or regulated environment will be highly regarded.
