What you’ll be doing
As Leader, Group Workers Compensation, you will provide strategic leadership for Workers Compensation across the Virgin Australia Group with a primary focus on our Comcare self-insurance environment.
This is a specialist leadership role requiring deep, hands on expertise in the Comcare scheme and self- insurance licensing framework. You will lead a high performing team, partner with third party administrators and oversee workers compensation portfolios across both Comcare and state based schemes, ensuring alignment, compliance and performance across all jurisdictions.
Balancing strategic foresight with operational excellence, you’ll ensure legislative compliance, financial sustainability, and best practice injury management, while embedding a customer centric, early intervention approach that supports our people to recover and return to meaningful work.
Reporting to the Head of People Safety, you will:
- Act as the Group’s Comcare subject matter expert, advising senior leaders on risk, compliance, emerging trends and complex claims
- Lead, inspire and develop a high performing team with a strong service mindset
- Own and maintain the Group’s Comcare self-insurance, including audit readiness, regulatory engagement, actuarial requirements, provisions, bank guarantees and XOL arrangements
- Ensure full compliance with Comcare and state-based workers compensation schemes across all jurisdictions
- Monitor legislative change and drive implementation across systems, processes and training
- Provide oversight of complex and litigated Comcare claims, partnering with legal providers and internal stakeholders
- Hold third party claims administrators accountable through performance monitoring, governance forums and SLA’s
- Drive financially sustainable outcomes through claims strategy, estimate reviews, performance analysis and proactive risk management
- Drive clear, insightful reporting to senior leaders, actuaries, insurers and regulators
You’ll be great in this role if you have…
- Extensive, hands-on experience within the Comcare scheme, ideally in a self-insured organisation is essential
- Proven experience managing or supporting a Comcare self-insurance licence and regulatory obligations
- Strong understanding of workers compensation legislation across Comcare and state-based schemes with the ability to navigate jurisdictional complexity
- Demonstrated experience leading teams and delivering outcomes in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment
- 5-10+ years’ experience in workers compensation claims management, rehabilitation, case management or injury management (aviation industry experience desirable)
- Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills at senior and executive levels
- Strong people leadership with a collaborative, inclusive approach
- Confidence navigating complex claims strategy, litigation and financial performance (including actuarial impacts)
- Analytical and strategic mindset with the ability to turn insight into action
