Hello. We’re Virgin Australia.
We’re the airline that’s always done things a little different. Our way. The Virgin way.
We’re on a mission to make flying better than ‘nice’. And to do that, it takes a team of talented people who are passionate about customer experience, doing the right thing always, with a relentless focus on safety – in the air, on the ground and in our workplaces. A team who values real diversity and inclusion, in a big brand with big ambitions.
What you’ll be doing
As a Fleet Performance Engineer within our VARA Fleet Operations team, you’ll play a critical role in maintaining the operational integrity, reliability and availability of our fleet.
You’ll take a proactive, data-driven approach to fleet health, providing strategic oversight of aircraft technical performance and leading the investigation and resolution of defects that impact reliability and on-time performance.
Working in a highly cross-functional environment, you’ll collaborate closely with Maintenance Watch, Reliability, Fleet Engineering, Maintenance Operations, Flight Operations and Operations Control to ensure technical issues are identified early, resolved effectively and aligned with both safety and business objectives.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring fleet defects and aircraft technical health to maximise availability and minimise operational disruption
- Leading in-depth defect investigations, including root cause analysis and trend identification
- Providing technical guidance during troubleshooting to support timely aircraft return to service
- Driving the Performance & Reliability Program, including recurrent defect management and preventative maintenance actions
- Supporting reliability analysis and the delivery of quarterly reliability review meetings
- Working with OEMs and internal stakeholders to implement engineering solutions and AMP variations where required
- Partnering with Procurement to develop robust work scopes for rotable components
- Championing safety, compliance and continuous improvement across fleet operations
Through your work, you’ll directly contribute to a safe, reliable and customer-focused flying program.
You’ll be great in this role if you have…
- An aircraft maintenance engineer licence (or previously held) in Category B1, B2 or C, or an equivalent overseas licence; or
- An engineering qualification (Diploma level or higher) in Aeronautical, Avionics, Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics
- CASA type ratings and experience on VARA aircraft types (E2-190 and/or A320) – highly regarded
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in aircraft maintenance operations and/or Maintenance Watch
- Experience in Maintenance Watch and/or Fleet Engineering environments
- Exposure to aircraft reliability programs (MSG-3)
- Experience using systems such as TRAX, IAS and/or Movement Manager
- Previous leadership, management or supervisory experience (desirable)
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving capability
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Advanced data and computer skills, including Excel, Power BI, Word and Outlook
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, operational environment
- Confidence making timely technical assessments and sound operational decisions
- Training in Six Sigma, project management or conflict resolution (desirable)
