Hello. We’re Virgin Australia. We’re the airline that’s always done things a little different. Our way. The Virgin way. We’re on a mission to make flying better than ‘nice’. And to do that, it takes a team of talented people who are passionate about customer experience, doing the right thing always, with a focus on safety – in the air, on the ground and in our workplaces. A team who values real diversity and inclusion, in a big brand with big ambitions.

What you’ll be doing

As our Engineering Lead - Integration, you’ll play a key role in shaping how our systems connect, scale and perform across the business. Sitting within our Technology Platforms team, you’ll lead the design and delivery of modern integration solutions that power our operations, commercial platforms and customer experiences.

You’ll lead software development squads to build secure, reliable and high-performing solutions, while setting the standard for engineering excellence across integration technologies.

Whilst this role doesn’t have direct reports, you will regularly be leading a squad of 5-10 Engineers, Automation Testers and Designers for the relevant project.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the design and delivery of microservices and event-based integration solutions for our loyalty customers and partners
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership across development, code quality and solution design
  • Translate solution architecture into detailed, scalable technical designs
  • Guide and mentor engineers, uplifting capability and embedding best practice
  • Oversee CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices to ensure efficient, reliable deployments
  • Collaborate with architects, cloud, cyber and delivery teams to deliver integrated solutions
  • Act as the escalation point for complex technical issues and lead resolution where required
  • Drive continuous improvement across engineering practices, automation and platform performance
  • Support delivery planning, estimation and prioritisation to ensure outcomes are achieved on time and within budget
  • Ensure solutions are secure, scalable and aligned to strategic technology direction
  • Take ownership of long-term sustainability of APIs within this area (about 100 APIs)

You’ll be part of a high-performing Integration Platforms team, modernising how Virgin Australia connects systems through API-led and event-driven architecture, using technologies such as AWS, Kafka and Kubernetes.

You’ll be great in this role if you have…

  • Strong experience leading the development of microservices, event driven architecture, cloud native workloads and AI first build practices
  • Deep technical expertise across modern integration technologies, with proven experience leading a team of 5-10 Engineers
  • Experience with technologies such as Java (Spring Boot), AWS, Kafka, Codex and Kubernetes
  • Strong understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines and cloud-native development
  • Proven ability to design scalable, high-throughput and low-latency systems
  • Experience mentoring and leading engineers, driving best practice and capability uplift
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex technical challenges
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence both technical and business stakeholders
  • Have driven the adoption of agentic coding assistants, and their collaboration with human team members to drive velocity and productivity improvements

We’re committed to looking after you, with some of the best benefits and conditions in the industry – including (but not limited to):

  • Discounted flights for you and your loved ones (including $1000 worth of travel credits per year)
  • A flexible, hybrid work style. Work from home or the office, adapt your location to suit your style and needs
  • One of Brisbane’s most admired head office locations, with South Bank train station, a supermarket, pharmacy, and lunch options downstairs plus a 5-minute walk to the Busway, a rooftop restaurant and onsite gym (with a low membership fee) and South Bank Parklands just across the road
  • Discounts on travel insurance, lounge membership, car hire, accommodation, and experiences worldwide
  • Cheaper hospitality, retail, technology, beauty and wellness services
  • Free counselling and access to a well-being app to support your physical, mental, social and financial health
  • ‘Dress for Your Day’ – enjoy the freedom to wear whatever makes you feel great for the type of work you do and the day you have ahead of you.
