Quality and Safety Specialist - Engineering Investigator

Hello. We’re Virgin Australia. We’re the airline that’s always done things a little different. Our way. The Virgin way. We’re on a mission to make flying better than ‘nice’. And to do that, it takes a team of talented people who are passionate about customer experience, doing the right thing always, with a focus on safety – in the air, on the ground and in our workplaces. A team who values real diversity and inclusion, in a big brand with big ambitions.

The Quality and Safety Specialist – Engineering Investigator, is responsible for undertaking ongoing daily quality and safety event reviews and where necessary, investigation of operational occurrences involving engineering as well as maintenance escapes from Part 145 Aircraft Maintenance Organisations performing maintenance on behalf of Virgin Australia.

The investigator role also has a secondary function of carrying out or assisting with quality audits of Virgin Australia CAMO functions, approved AMO’s and Component Overhaul organisations.

This position will be a permanent position based at our Brisbane Airport Hangar Engineering Operations Centre, and will report through to the Leader Quality & Safety, Engineering.

What you’ll be doing

  • Coordinate with Fleet Engineering to act to correct deficiencies or unserviceabilities reported
  • Evaluate and investigate any maintenance errors/escapes resulting from Aircraft Maintenance Organisations carrying out maintenance support on behalf Virgin Australia
  • Respond to ATSB ‘Request for Further Information’ regarding engineering events
  • Assist in the independent Audit program of external AMOs
  • Consistently and professionally respond to communication from other departments regarding engineering Quality and Safety matters

  • Be a positive change agent for engineering quality and safety initiatives

You’ll be great in this role if you have…

  • Aviation Investigator qualifications (this could be provided for the right person)
  • A Knowledge of Part 42/145 regulations
  • Undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications in Aviation science are desirable but not essential, if you are an aviation geek (i.e. the kind of person who reads ATSB/NTSB/ AAIB/BEA reports for fun}
  • More importantly, we are looking for a mid-career engineering professional with an eye for detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong understanding of human factors, who is seeking a move into the fascinating side of CAMO aviation engineering quality and safety investigation and who wants to make a real difference every day.
  • If you have excellent inter-personal communication (diplomatic) skills, intense curiosity about why things happen and are an aviation geek at heart, this role is for you.
  • Our passionate team is looking for someone who has a desire to help make Virgin Australia the safest airline in the world by building strong relationships across operational divisions to improve processes, procedures and act proactively to anticipate challenges, and tease apart engineering events until we understand why they happened
  • Your practical experience and expertise in the application of aviation safety standards and safe operating practices is highly desirable but your desire to stretch your career to make our operations even safer, is even more important
  • If you are detail orientated and love solving puzzles you will love this role.
  • Periodic national and international travel is a feature of our work overseeing AMOs undertaking work on Virgin Australia’s behalf.

We’re committed to looking after you, with some of the best benefits and conditions in the industry – including (but not limited to):
