Senior Legal Counsel - Ethics & Compliance

As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will have the opportunity to assist the Virgin Australia Group on a range of ethics and regulatory compliance matters, including driving ethics and regulatory compliance goal setting and performance, and aligning and coordinating priorities and activities with senior stakeholders. Reporting into the Head of Ethics and Compliance, this will be a diverse and busy role suited to a high performing and accomplished Legal Professional who works well in a dynamic and collaborative environment. 


What you’ll work on:

  • Developing, managing and maintaining Ethics and Compliance groupwide framework, including driving program objectives, milestones, metrics and reporting to continually enhance and scale the ethics and compliance programs.
  • Providing advice to senior business stakeholders in relation to a broad range of compliance and ethics matters, including anti money laundering, anticorruption, sanctions, conflicts of interest and other regulatory matters.
  • Partnering with our Legal, Governance, Risk and People teams, preparing, maintaining, and regularly assessing policies, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Providing training and mentoring on compliance with Virgin Australia’s ethics and compliance program, code of conduct, and other related policies/procedures.
  • Conducting, overseeing and providing support in connection with internal investigations.
  • Proactively identifying ethics compliance risk areas and strategies to mitigate them.
  • Effectively managing the provision of advice by external legal service providers where required.
  • Assisting the Head of Ethics & Compliance to meet reporting obligations for the Executive Leadership Team and the Virgin Australia Group Boards, including by preparing updates on current matters or relevant issues as required.


What you’ll bring:

  • A Bachelor of Laws degree, a current Legal Practicing Certificate and at least 8 years relevant experience within a law firm or an inhouse team.
  • A strong knowledge of:
    • development and management of an effective ethics and compliance program, including relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards; and
    • broad policymaking and compliance experience, including use and management of Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) tools and systems. 
    • company policy and compliance matters, including AML, ABC and ESG programs.
  • Experience working with and presenting to senior leadership.
  • You are passionate team player with a sense of humour and enjoy learning but also mentoring.
  • You are comfortable working in an evolving and growing environment that is prone to changes and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • You apply sound, practical business judgment to your legal recommendations, and are creative at solving problems while balancing important legal risks for the business.
  • You can work autonomously and independently with minimal guidance but are also comfortable working collaboratively as part of a team.
